Best Weight Loss Supplements 2026

Twenty-three products, scored on dose and evidence rather than on how loudly they sell. Here is what each one is actually for.

Disclosure: we may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Commissions differ by product, which is why the ranking policy is published: the score decides the band a product sits in, and nothing we earn can move it past a better-scoring one.

Ranking changes(Changed August 21, 2026)
  1. August 21, 2026 Fat Burn Active’s displayed score was corrected from 9.4 to 8.2, the value its own published sub-scores produce. A hand-set number had survived an earlier sitewide recalculation. Its position did not change: 8.2 is the joint-highest merit score in this category.
  2. August 15, 2026 Every score was recomputed from the published methodology, because the previous scores could not be reproduced from the stated criteria. The order changed in 16 of 31 categories. At the same time the ranking policy moved to published merit bands: the score decides the band, and nothing commercial can move a product past a better-scoring one.
  3. June 30, 2026 Meltamin was removed from this ranking: the manufacturer discontinued it. Its review stays up for reference and links a live alternative.

Most of this category is caffeine and green tea catechins in a different bottle. The differences that matter are the dose, whether anything else in the formula does anything, and what you are paying per day for it.

Worth knowing before you buyNothing we would swap it for

The evening blend is built on senna, a stimulant laxative that regulators across the EU and UK limit to about a week of occasional use. A daily tea built on it is not a weight product, and the weight that moves is water. There is no better version of this to recommend.

What these weight loss supplements are built on

Scores are easy to publish and impossible to check. So here is the same ranking from the other direction: the ingredients these 22 products are actually built on, and what the trials say about each one. Follow any of them to the evidence.

Ingredients with an established effective dose

These have a dose the research settled on, which means you can check a label against something. 19 of the 22 products below are built on two or more of them.

Ingredients we would not pay extra for

These turn up across the category without a settled effective dose behind them. That does not make them useless; it means a product should not cost more because it contains them.

  • Cayenne ×3
  • Bitter Orange ×3
  • Vitamin B6 ×3
  • MCT Oil ×2
  • Acai Berry ×2
  • Black Pepper ×2
  • Synephrine ×1
  • Capsaicin ×1

Buying Guide

How to Choose a Weight Loss Supplement That Actually Works

Set realistic expectations. A 2021 review of 67 placebo-controlled trials found the best-performing ingredients (chitosan, glucomannan and CLA) gave only 1 to 2 kg more weight loss than placebo, below any clinically meaningful threshold. The authors found not enough evidence to recommend any of them. NCCIH adds that many "fat burners" have never been tested for safety.

What the evidence says about common ingredients

  • Green tea extract: a 2009 meta-analysis found catechins with caffeine gave about 1.3 kg more weight loss than placebo. A later Cochrane review found the effect in studies outside Japan was not significant and unlikely to be clinically important. Liver injury has been reported, mostly with extract capsules, so take it with food. See our green tea extract page.
  • Glucomannan (konjac fibre): a 2014 review of 9 trials found no significant weight loss, and the 2021 review found about 1.3 kg. It swells in water, and case reports describe it blocking the gullet. Never take it dry.
  • CLA: about 3.2 g a day gave a modest fat loss in a 2007 meta-analysis. Trials of 6 months or more found about 0.7 kg extra loss, judged not clinically relevant.
  • Chromium picolinate: reviews found 0.5 to 1.1 kg extra loss, which their authors called of uncertain or debatable clinical relevance. More on our chromium picolinate page.
  • Caffeine: raises daily calorie burn slightly in short lab studies, which has not been shown to produce meaningful weight loss. See our caffeine page.

Red flags to avoid

  • Claims the FTC says cannot be true. These include:
    • two pounds or more a week for a month without diet or exercise
    • big losses no matter what you eat
    • weight that stays off after you stop
    • "blocking" fat or calories for substantial loss
    • safely losing more than three pounds a week for over four weeks
    • results for everyone
  • Heavy stimulant stacks. The FDA cites 400 mg of caffeine a day as not generally linked to negative effects in healthy adults. Count every source, including guarana and coffee.
  • DMAA or BMPEA on the label. The FDA says DMAA products sold as supplements are illegal and can raise blood pressure. BMPEA is not a legal dietary ingredient.
  • Diet pills from unknown sellers. The FDA says many are likely to contain hidden drugs.
  • Proprietary blends that hide how much of each ingredient you get.

How to use this ranking

Treat any supplement as a small extra alongside diet and activity. Ask a pharmacist before combining one with medicines, and ask a doctor about approved treatments if your weight affects your health.

Our Methodology

Products in the Weight Loss category are scored on five weighted criteria: ingredient evidence (35%) — each ingredient is checked against published RCTs and meta-analyses; dosage adequacy (25%) — we compare label doses to clinically effective amounts; safety profile (20%) — stimulant load, banned substance screening, third-party testing; value (10%) — price per serving relative to category average; user experience (10%) — taste, ease of use, and tolerability.
