Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Noto anche come: Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Meso-zeaxanthin, FloraGLO, Lutemax 2020, Macular carotenoids

Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only two carotenoids the body concentrates in the macula, the small central patch of the retina responsible for sharp vision. The body cannot make either, so what reaches the eye comes from diet or a supplement, and the level in the macula is measurable. They are the most heavily researched supplement ingredients in eye health, and unusually for this category the headline trial was run by a government agency rather than a manufacturer.

Dosaggio di Lutein and Zeaxanthin a colpo d'occhio: dose efficace minima 10 mg lutein with 2 mg zeaxanthin daily, dose massima sicura 20 mg lutein daily in long-term studies

Come Funziona Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Both accumulate in the macular pigment, where they absorb short-wavelength blue light before it reaches the photoreceptors and quench the reactive oxygen species that light exposure produces. Macular pigment optical density rises with supplementation in a dose-dependent way, which is why this is one of the few supplement effects that can be measured directly rather than inferred from how someone feels.

Benefici

  • Age-related macular degeneration: AREDS2, run by the National Eye Institute on more than 4,000 participants, added 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin to the original AREDS formula. Across the whole group the addition did not beat beta-carotene, but in participants with the lowest dietary lutein intake it reduced progression to advanced AMD, and it avoided the lung-cancer signal beta-carotene carried in smokers. That is why lutein replaced beta-carotene in the formula sold today.
  • Macular pigment density: supplementation reliably raises measured macular pigment, which is the mechanism the AMD work rests on.
  • Visual performance: smaller trials report improvements in contrast sensitivity and glare recovery, on shorter timescales than the AMD outcomes.

Riepilogo della Ricerca

AREDS2 (JAMA 2013) is the anchor trial and one of the largest supplement trials ever run. A 2016 review in Nutrients covers the dose-response relationship with macular pigment optical density.

Dosaggio Consigliato

Dose minima efficace

10 mg lutein with 2 mg zeaxanthin daily

Dose massima sicura

20 mg lutein daily in long-term studies

10 mg lutein with 2 mg zeaxanthin is the AREDS2 dose and the one to compare any product against. Products commonly sell 20 mg or 40 mg of lutein, which is above the studied amount rather than better than it. Both are fat-soluble, so absorption is meaningfully better taken with a meal containing fat.

Effetti Collaterali

Well tolerated at the doses studied, with no serious adverse effects reported in AREDS2 over five years. Very high intakes over long periods can tint the skin faintly yellow, which is harmless and reverses on stopping.

Interazioni

No significant drug interactions are established. Absorption competes with other carotenoids, notably beta-carotene, when taken in the same dose.
