Biotin for Hair: Dosage, Benefits and Side Effects
Also known as: Vitamin B7, Vitamin H, D-biotin
Biotin is in almost every hair, skin and nail product on the market, at doses hundreds of times the adequate intake. The evidence for that use in people who are not deficient is close to absent, and there is a real, documented harm that has nothing to do with the hair: high-dose biotin interferes with common laboratory immunoassays, including troponin, and the FDA has issued a safety communication about it.
How Biotin Works
Biotin is a cofactor for five carboxylase enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis, amino acid catabolism and gluconeogenesis. Genuine deficiency causes hair loss and a scaly rash, which is where the cosmetic use originates. It does not follow that more biotin helps someone who has enough, and that inference is the entire basis of the category.
Benefits
- Documented deficiency: correcting it resolves the associated hair loss and dermatitis. This is the one clear indication.
- Hair and nails without deficiency: limited clinical evidence supports use. Reviews of telogen effluvium specifically discourage routine biotin use regardless of serum level.
- Biotinidase deficiency and related inherited disorders: treated with high-dose biotin under medical supervision.
Deficiency is uncommon in people eating a varied diet, which is why so much of this category is selling a correction nobody needs.
Research Summary
The FDA safety communication on biotin interference with troponin assays is the key document. Reviews of biotin in telogen effluvium conclude that routine use in hair loss should be discouraged outside true deficiency, and a case-report literature documents clinically significant laboratory errors traced to supplementation.
Recommended Dosage
Min effective dose
30 mcg/day (adequate intake, met by diet)
Max safe dose
No established upper limit; stop 72 hours before blood tests
The adequate intake for adults is 30 mcg/day and is met by ordinary food. Hair and nail supplements commonly contain 5,000-10,000 mcg, roughly 170 to 330 times that. No trial supports those doses for cosmetic use in people with normal biotin status.
Side Effects
Biotin itself is not toxic at high doses and no upper limit has been set. The harm is diagnostic rather than pharmacological: it distorts test results. Acne flares are reported anecdotally.
Interactions
This is the section that matters. High-dose biotin interferes with biotin-streptavidin immunoassays and can produce falsely low or falsely high results for troponin, TSH, free T4 and T3, parathyroid hormone, testosterone, oestradiol, hCG, ferritin and several tumour markers. The FDA has reported falsely low troponin results, the test used to diagnose a heart attack. Stop biotin at least 72 hours before blood tests and tell whoever ordered them that you take it.
